I don’t want to build your website.
This is what I’ve said in my head each and every time someone has reached out to me about building a new website for them in the last 11 months. After nearly a year of trying to wind down my website/ tech support business, I still get regular enquiries and sometimes I even begrudgingly said yes.
The truth is, I’m out of love with websites and I have been for quite a while. It’s something that Rachel Rodgers would say is in my zone of excellence and not my zone of genius.
It’s energetically draining for me to keep doing work that isn’t fulfilling. As a result, I started to drop some balls and the worst part is, I stopped caring that they dropped because there was simply no energy left over to care.
This wasn’t fair to my clients and it really sucked to be me.
The straw that broke the camel’s back happened earlier this year when I completed an intense web project with crazy timelines at a rock bottom rate… After it was done, I lay in bed for 3 days. Exhausted, angry and determined to never ever put myself through this again.
I quit the project after the first milestone and while that brought lots of relief, I still had active projects and no idea what I would replace this work with.
I’ve gotten incredibly clear over the past year or so that my genius lies in Strategy and NOT Execution. I have always been a big picture thinker with a knack for solving problems, specifically those related to business process.
Sure, I’ve assembled a team of people who are executors but it’s no fun juggling them and the increasing urgency of demands from clients.
This got me thinking about how I could shift away from this towards something more enjoyable, that’s more aligned with my genius.
My big AHA
As I reflected on my work over the years, it became clear that my clients may hire me for website work but what they really love about me is the way my brain works in helping them grow their business and navigate roadblocks.
This is illustrated by the many times they email to “bounce ideas off of me” or call me up to “see what I think”.
One client hired me for a website redesign and I showed him how to leverage his radio exposure to create a podcast and virtual personal training service.
I showed another client how to leverage their years of expertise and create a certification program and corporate training portal so they could spend less time travelling for business and more time travelling for pleasure.
I helped one of my best friends brilliantly articulate how she could position boudoir photography as a transformational experience.
In a strategy call, I showed someone how to combine a love of fashion, culture and language to make launch a consultancy for francophone fashion designers.
I love this shit!
So, I’ve decided to do two things.
- I am no longer offering any done-for-you website design or tech support services but I have created awesome tech toolkit that will allow you to create all your money-making pages on your website and make it look good without having to hire a developer. If you want to know more, head over to that website at cntrl.tech.
- I’m offering an option to work with me on a retainer basis where you can borrow my brain as often as you want for an entire year AND join me in person every quarter for a 3-day transformational business workshop. Here’s a video with my client Kathleen who attended my last one. We took great photos of her, recorded 4 marketing videos, mapped out her signature process, her offer and marketing plan all over the course of 3 days. We accomplished more than she did in 3 months on her own!
I’m so excited about the future and what it means for my clients! Tech matters, your website matters but the strategy behind how you use that website is where the money is and my job is to help you get it.
If you’d like to explore what working with me looks like, I’d be happy to share the details with you in a quick call. Schedule a time here.
