You’re not a serious business owner if you keep looking for free advice to grow your business.
If you’re truly serious about growing your business, stop asking for free advice.
Stop trying to “pick my brain” or ask a “quick question”
Free advice is a collection of throw away comments. Sure there’s some brilliance in there but when you inbox me to see “what I think” and I’m in the mood to respond, you’re likely getting 15 seconds of thought in between me watching tv with my hubby or cooking dinner.
Paid advice is well laid out, focused on you and carefully crafted based on the information that I have extracted about your situation. It is a product of careful research, thoughtful questions and a complete analysis of personal experience and education.
This doesn’t mean that every time you have a question you need to hire an expert.
Sometimes you just want some quick feedback on something that’s got you stuck. It’s totally fine to ask a colleague for their thoughts. Especially, when there’s a reciprocal relationship when it comes to sharing feedback. I’m a firm believer that everyone should have a business bestie or a mastermind where they can learn and grow from each other. However, you have to be very clear about what is appropriate for a colleague and what you should ask an expert about.
To be clear, here are some things that are “ok” to ask a non-expert – Does this headline turn you off or excite you? Which design is more appealing, a, b or c? I need to hire someone, where did you find your person?
Here’s what’s not ok
- I need to build a funnel to get more clients, can you tell me how that works?
- Can you review my web page and give me feedback?
- My ad isn’t converting, can you help me figure out why?
- I want to launch a new product, what strategy should I use?
These are all questions that when answered correctly will make you MONEY and when answered carelessly will cost you money. Each of them requires focused evaluation – who’s the customer, what’s the targeting on your ad, what’s the product, how did you position the offer, where’s your traffic coming from…
The people who go around looking for free advice in these areas find themselves ALWAYS stuck where nothing seems to be working. How can you expect someone to spend their money with you, when you won’t spend money on yourself?
Make the financial commitment and get something bankable – information that can catapult your business forward instead of offhanded comments from someone you’ve interrupted.
